RETURN OF WILDERNESS IN FULLNESS OF TIME |
by Margaret Jane Jones |
The old whetstone quarries abandoned by men,
Are now hidden lakes amid dense growing woods,
Home to wildlife in burrow, tree top, and den,
And bank-dwelling beavers and migrant wild ducks.
Are now hidden lakes amid dense growing woods,
White pine, hemlock, red maple, and beech,
With bank-dwelling beavers and migrant wild ducks,
And porcupines, chickadees, bobcats, and such.
White pine, hemlock, red maple, and beech,
O’er hills of stone tailings ‘neath thickets and brush,
With porcupines, chickadees, bobcats, and such,
In unfettered seclusion—often unseen.
O’er hills of stone tailings ‘neath thickets and brush,
Home to wildlife in burrow, tree top, and den,
In unfettered seclusion—often unseen.
The old whetstone quarries abandoned by men.

The whetstone quarries as described in this Pantoum Poem, are
located on Cutting Hill Road also known as Lily Pond Road
in the State of New Hampshire. More specifically, they are
found in the country side of Haverhill, New Hampshire.
The quarries and surrounding land are owned, managed,
and conserved by Legacy Forest Trust—as part of an effort
to conserve forest lands, water-sheds, and wildlife.
